Short Story Reading Response

Reading a short story is only half the work — the real learning happens when you stop and think about what it means. In this activity, you will read a short original story, then post a reading response in the comments below. Your response should cover the story’s theme, its main characters, and the moral or lesson it teaches.

Step 1: Read the Story

Read the short story below carefully from beginning to end before writing your response. Pay attention to the characters’ actions and the choices they make — those details will help you figure out the theme and moral.

🌉 “The Bridge Builder”

An original short story for Mr. Alexander’s Class

Marcus was the fastest kid in seventh grade — everyone knew it. He won every race at the district track meet, and he made sure nobody forgot it. He walked the halls with his shoulders back, giving a quick nod to the other athletes but barely glancing at anyone else.

One afternoon, Marcus was rushing to practice when he noticed a new student, Sofia, standing alone by the gym doors with a crumpled school map in her hands. She looked lost and embarrassed. Marcus almost walked right past her. He was already three minutes late.

“Hey,” Sofia said, her voice barely above a whisper. “Do you know where Room 114 is? I’ve been walking in circles.”

Marcus hesitated. Coach Rivera did not like tardiness. But something about the way Sofia’s cheeks were turning red stopped him.

“Yeah. Follow me — I walk right by it.” He slowed his pace just enough for her to keep up.

On the way, Sofia mentioned she ran cross-country at her old school. Marcus raised an eyebrow. “How fast?” he asked.

“Fast enough,” she said, and smiled.

Coach Rivera did make Marcus run an extra lap for being late. But as he ran, Marcus spotted Sofia watching from the bleachers. She gave him a thumbs up. He laughed and ran faster than he ever had.

By the end of the season, Sofia had joined the track team. On the day of the regional championship, Marcus twisted his ankle on the warm-up lap. He limped to the bench, furious. Sofia crouched down next to him.

“You trained me all season,” she said. “Let me run for both of us.”

She did. She won the race — by one second. When she crossed the finish line, she pointed straight at Marcus.

In that moment, Marcus understood something he had never really thought about before: being the fastest runner in the room means nothing if you never stop to help someone find the room in the first place.

📖 Vocabulary to Know

  • Theme — the central message or big idea an author wants the reader to take away from a story
  • Main Characters — the people the story is mostly about; they drive the plot forward
  • Moral / Lesson — the practical life lesson taught through the characters’ experiences
  • Motivation — what pushes a character to act the way they do

Step 2: Think About Your Response

Before you write your comment, take a minute to think through these three questions. You do not need to answer each one as a separate sentence — just use them to organize your thinking.

1. What is the theme? What is the big idea or message of the story? Think beyond the plot — what does it make you reflect on in your own life?

2. Who are the main characters? Who drives the story? Briefly describe each main character and what role they play. What do their actions tell us about them?

3. What is the moral or lesson? What should the reader learn from this story? How does Marcus change from the beginning to the end?

Step 3: Write Your Reading Response in the Comments

Scroll down to the comment section and post your reading response. Make sure your response is written in complete sentences and covers all three parts below.

✅ Your Comment Must Include:

  1. Theme: State the theme of the story in your own words. Start with: “The theme of ‘The Bridge Builder’ is…”
  2. Main Characters: Name and briefly describe the main characters. What are they like? How do they change?
  3. Moral / Lesson: Explain the moral in one or two sentences. What life lesson does this story teach?

📌 Reminder: Format your comment heading like this — Reading Response: [your response goes here] — so it’s easy to find!

Step 4: Check Your Work Before Submitting

Before you post, read your response one more time and ask yourself:

  • Did I identify the theme clearly? The theme should be a broad idea — not just a plot summary. “Marcus helped someone” is a summary. “Kindness opens doors” is a theme.
  • Did I describe the main characters? Go beyond just their names — mention a trait or the role they played in the story.
  • Is my moral a lesson, not a summary? The moral should be something you could apply to your own life. Think of it as advice the author is giving you.
