An idea becomes a page. A page becomes a book.

01 / THE PROJECT

Give student writing a real audience.

Students choose a reader and a format—story, comic, field guide, poetry, or how-to book. They map the pages, draft the words, create visuals, and revise after a peer reads their work. The finished PDF becomes a book a student can actually hold.

01 / PLAN

Know the reader

Choose the audience, purpose, book format, and page sequence.

02 / CREATE

Build in Canva

Write, illustrate, and design readable pages at the printer’s selected size.

03 / PROOF

Check every page

Revise, export PDF Print, inspect the file, and order a physical proof.

02 / CLASSROOM PLAN

A week to begin. Time to make it good.

Day 1 / Storyboard

Study mentor books, identify the reader, and plan the page journey.

Day 2 / Draft

Write the full text or script before spending time on decoration.

Day 3 / Design

Build the interior in Canva with consistent type and visual rhythm.

Day 4 / Revise

Get specific feedback from a reader and improve the book.

Day 5 / Proof

Export, inspect the PDF, submit files, and reflect on author choices.

Plan more work sessions for longer writing, original illustrations, and final proof corrections. Printing and shipping happen after the classroom week.

03 / MAKE IT PHYSICAL

A real paperback is within reach.

For a first classroom run, consider Lulu’s A5 paperback. Its 5.83 × 8.27-inch pages feel like a compact book students can carry and share. Students can write and design in Canva while the teacher manages the print order.

A reader holding a printed book
The goal: a printed copy students can read, keep, and share.
Start with three decisions: Who is the book for? What kind of book will students make? How will the class order printed copies? Lulu’s perfect-bound paperbacks require at least 32 interior pages, so plan the format before students start their Canva designs.

Before sending student work to a print service, check school and family permissions for names, photos, and public sharing. Order a proof before placing a class order.

04 / KEEP EXPLORING
