Choose a side, test it against tradeoffs, and write a claim that is stronger than “because I want it.”
By Mr. Alexander · Middle school learning

Would you rather be widely famous but have an ordinary income, or be financially wealthy while almost nobody outside your community knows your name?
This is a fictional choice for reasoning practice. You may define the details, but state your assumptions. Money and recognition do not automatically create happiness, safety, influence, or freedom.
I can defend a choice with reasons, examples, and a counterargument so I can make my thinking clear to a reader.
- I state a specific claim.
- I explain at least two different reasons.
- I address a real tradeoff or counterargument.
- I revise vague language into precise language.
Define the choice before you argue
Known by many people
Your work or name is widely recognized. You earn an ordinary income. Recognition may create opportunities, but it can also reduce privacy.
Financially wealthy and private
You have enough money to cover needs and many wants. You are not widely recognized. Wealth may create choices, but it does not guarantee purpose or good decisions.
Vocabulary: A claim is your main position. A reason explains why you hold it. An example makes the reason concrete. A counterargument is a reasonable objection to your claim. A rebuttal answers that objection.
Use criteria instead of guessing
Choose three or four criteria that matter to you. You might consider privacy, influence, security, creative opportunity, responsibility, or time. Then decide which criteria matter most.
| Criterion | Possible advantage of fame | Possible advantage of wealth |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | A public platform can connect you with people. | Being unknown may make everyday life more private. |
| Influence | Recognition can help an idea reach a large audience. | Money can support projects or organizations. |
| Choice | Recognition may open doors. | Financial resources may expand available options. |
| Risk | Attention can bring scrutiny and pressure. | Resources require careful decisions and do not solve every problem. |
Study a model response
Model: I would choose to be wealthy and mostly unknown because privacy and control over my time matter more to me than public recognition. Financial security could let me support people and projects I value without turning my daily life into a public event. Fame could give my ideas a larger audience, which is a real advantage. However, I would rather build influence through useful work than depend on strangers knowing my name. My choice is not based on money solving every problem; it is based on valuing flexibility and privacy.
Notice what the model does: it states the choice, names two priorities, gives a concrete use, acknowledges the strongest benefit of the other side, and answers that counterargument.
Your turn: Famous or rich?
Big question: Would you rather be famous or wealthy? There is no single correct answer, but your reasons should make sense.
Answer two questions in 3–5 sentences: (1) Which would you choose, and what are TWO different reasons? (2) What is one good argument for the other choice, and why would you still stick with yours?
Help: “I would choose ___ because ___ and ___. Someone might prefer ___ because ___, but I still think ___.”
Optional stretch challenge
Explain how your decision might change if fame included less privacy or wealth had a limit.
Check your understanding
- Which sentence is a claim: “Privacy matters,” or “I would choose wealth because privacy matters more to me than recognition”?
- Why does a counterargument strengthen a response?
- What assumption in your choice needs to be stated?
Compare and revise
The second sentence is a claim because it takes a position and connects it to a reason. A counterargument shows that you understand a real tradeoff and gives you something meaningful to answer. Your assumptions might define how famous, how wealthy, how private, or how much choice each option provides.
Revision check: underline your claim, circle two different reasons, box your counterargument, and star the sentence that answers it. If two reasons repeat the same idea, replace one.
Share a respectful response in the comments, or use your teacher’s assigned response space. You may disagree with someone’s choice, but respond to the reasoning rather than the person. For another quick prompt, explore the writing prompts.

I would rather be rich than famous because if I were to be famous, I would have barely any privacy and I would get recognized everywhere. Being rich means that you could go out without being surrounded by people wanting pictures.
Rich because I can buy ever thing that I want and I can use that money to help my mom whit stuff she needs.
I would choose to be rich because money matters to me more than fame. A reasonable objection is that being famous could make you rich. That matters, but I still choose to be rich because it is not guaranteed to be rich and famous at the same time.
I would rather be rich because I don’t want people and paparazzi all around me and at my door in the morning.I would be rich so I can buy a house when I get older. I would also want to be rich so I can buy a car and clothes. I would use the money to buy the animal shelter things and help kids and adults that are in need.
I would rather be rich because I can travel without having hundreds eyes on me and I would have a quiet place. Money also removes stress and buys comfort.
I would choose to be rich because being rich matters more to me than being famous. A reasonable objection is that you’re very well known from people, and they will compliment you a lot. That matters, but I still choose to be rich because I would have privacy, I could pay my parents bills, pay for food, and I can travel around.
I would choose to be famous because I would be popular and Movie Directors would invite me to be the main character in a movie. A reasonable objection is that being rich will give me enough money to pay debts of and money lowns. BUT being famous would make me play important roles in movies and make money from those movies. As I gain money from playing roles in movies Would make me rich and Famous at the same time.
I would rather be rich because being rich means you wont have financial problems and if you were famous you would always be surrounded by a lot of people and I just don’t like that. Being famous does not always mean your going to be rich.
I would choose to be rich because you can go around helping people out and you can help your family. it matters more to me than anything. A reasonable objection is something you can do That matters, but I still choose to be rich because I would still wanna help people out and help out my family if something is happening with one of them so that I can have enough money to help out people.
I would rather be famous because you can be known by your videos, movies, and if you are a soccer star your club will give a lot of money from your contract each year your supposed to be at the club. I mean yeah you are going to have a lot people following you because your famous but at the same time thats not gonna happen just because famous doesn´t mean thats gonna happen that much. If your a soccer star people aren´t goign to know where you live and just wait outside of your house, so thats why I would be famous than being rich.
I would choose being rich because moeny matters more to me than being famous. A reasonable objection is with being famous there are stalkers that would be take pictures of you without permison .That matters, but I still choose money because money can buy you a lot of things like happiness, joy and with being famous they will be hatred towards you and hate speech’s to you.
I think i would rather be rich my reasoning for this is because I can buy a new house with it when im older and because i think being famous wouldn`t give me any type of privacy and i would have many people following me around when i go out to stores and stuff and me personally I wouldn`t like being self centered or people taking pictures of me sometimes also being famous doesnt mean your rich and being rich wont lead me to not wanting to leave my home I can also have control over my time like i wouldnt have to schedule times to meet people or daily moves places they think people wont find them being rich you wouldnt have to do all that you can have a calm day.
I would choose to be rich because I wouldn’t have any privacy, I would help my parents, and being famous doesn’t always mean that you could be wealthy, this matters more to me than being famous and having to handle people that are bothering me. A reasonable objection is I don’t want people all up on my business.
I would choose to be famous because being known and loved matters more to me than just having money and I’ll just be a normal person with more money than others. A reasonable objection is that fame destroys your personal privacy and brings unwanted public scrutiny. That matters, but I still choose to be famous because I can inspire and connect with millions of people.
I would choose to become rich because if I was famous then people would follow me, I would have no privacy, and people would take pictures of me, and if I’m rich then I would have privacy, can support my family, and live a peaceful life without anyone taking pictures of me.
