Favorite Things Writing Prompt for Middle School Students

Everyone has favorite things.

Maybe it’s a food you could eat every day.
Maybe it’s a sport you can’t stop playing.
Maybe it’s a video game, a hobby, a friend, or even a quiet place you like to relax.

This favorite things writing prompt gives you the chance to write about something you truly enjoy and explain why it matters to you.

When you explain what you like and why you like it, you are practicing strong writing skills. Good writers do more than list their favorites. They describe, explain, and give examples.

Choose ONE topic:

  • Your favorite food
  • Your favorite activity or sport
  • Your favorite game
  • Your favorite memory with friends
  • Your favorite hobby
  • Your favorite place
  • Your favorite school subject

Then answer these questions in your paragraph:

  1. What is your favorite thing?
  2. When did you start liking it?
  3. Why do you enjoy it?
  4. How does it make you feel?
  5. Why would you recommend it to someone else?

Writing Expectations

  • Write at least 1–2 well-developed paragraphs
  • Use complete sentences
  • Include specific details and examples
  • Check spelling and punctuation before posting

If you finish early, challenge yourself by adding a short story or memory connected to your favorite thing.

  1. My favorite food is pizza because me and my boyfriend eat it every time we hangout. My mom orders it after we spent a long day out together and while we eat we watch ¨on my block¨ while we make jokes and laugh.

Middles school kids like sports and as a middle school kid myself I think people like basketball a lot but a whole bunch of kids like soccer too but me, I like basketball more then soccer and I find it more fun and playing with multiple people makes it a lot more fun because it is more fun to play in my option and playing in a REAL game just seems so fun.

  3. My favorite food is Udon or Pho, Udon is a thick chewy like meat and stew. And Pho is a clear, meat savory, cook-it-yourself dish.
    My favorite sport is soccer, but preferably basketball because I enjoy running across the grass, but I also enjoy wanting to shoot hoops and play with other teams.
    My favorite game is Taiko No Tatsujin Drum n’ Fun, Taiko No Tatsujin Drum n’ Fun is a Japanese imported Nintendo rhythm game that realesed in 2018.
    My favorite memory with my friends is when we had sent each other tik toks and when we had played UNO together.
    My favorite hobby is drawing and painting, the type of painting I do is water colors, I would draw in different art styles as well.
    My favorite place is Habachi Grilll and Buffet because of the food and the deserts I enjoy!
    My favorite subject is Science, but preferably ELA because I like science and doing projects, but I also love writing and typing out stories.
    My favorite thing is plushies, especially from the Fuggler brand.
    Early 2025 I started liking the Fuggler plushies, that’s when I got my Donotello Collab plushies from Walmart.
    Because I get to express myself through my plushies and my plushies are weird.
    Cool and awesome because they have so many plushies on the market and I only have oh so many.
    Because I believe in trying something new almost every year.

  4. My favorite food is hot dogs because I like the bread with the ketchup. I started liking it with my dad who makes hot dogs outside when I was 8. He gave me one to eat and I eat it so that when I like hot dogs. the reason why I enjoy it is because its flavor teases well and like the cooked bread with the ketchup. It makes me feel relaxed when you eat food you like and you want to eat more. the reason why would i recommend it to someone else is because people are already like it.

  5. My favorite thing is basketball. I started liking this sport in 4th grade. I enjoy this sport because it keeps me active, you can play with friends and family, and in my opinion a very easy sport to play. Basketball makes me feel happy and exhausted. I recommend that someone play this sport because you can learn a lot of things like strategy and teamwork. Another reason you should play is because it keeps you very active and healthy. All in all, My favorite thing/sport is basketball and I think you should try it too.

  6. My favorite memory with a friend, is when me and Nene had a sleep over and we ate food whale watching a show and stayed up till 2 AM to finish the show. I started liking the show when I first watched it, it’s now one of my favorites. I enjoyed it because it was fun and I got to hang out with one of my friends and got to do a lot of fun things. It makes me feel really happy because I get bored by myself really easily and it makes me happy to have someone to hang out with on the weekends. I would recommend it to someone else because why would you not want to hangout with your friends on your weekend when your board, I recommend finding a really close friend to hangout with.

  7. My favorite food/snack is quesabirrias. I started liking quesabirrias when i was 4. Ever since I started trying it i been in love with it and it makes me feel better when in strong emotions. I enjoy the cheesy, soft, and tasteful quesabirria when my mom makes them and i take my time to enjoy every second with it. Quesabirrias make me feel good. They make me feel like theres no tomorrow. I would recomend some else other thatn me try them because they can change the way you feel and like trying new things.
