Report cards are almost out, and this is your moment to reflect. No one is perfect and every student can grow. The good news is that you have another chance to show what you are capable of. The best way to start is with a clear and realistic goal. Goal setting for better grades is not about trying to be perfect. It is about getting better each week.
Why Setting a Goal Matters
When you set a goal, you take control of your learning. Instead of saying “I will try harder,” you are saying, “Here is my plan.”
Goals give you direction. They help you focus on what matters most, your effort, your habits, and your mindset. When you track your progress, small improvements turn into big changes.
How to Set an Attainable Goal
Follow these steps to create a goal that is possible to achieve.
- Be specific.
Do not say “I will get better grades.” Write something like, “I will turn in every assignment on time for the next six weeks.” - Make it measurable.
You should be able to tell if you met your goal. For example, “I will raise my science grade from a C to a B.” - Keep it realistic.
Choose something you can do with steady effort. One step at a time is better than a big promise that you cannot keep. - Give yourself a deadline.
Aim to reach your goal by the next report card. Deadlines help you stay on track. - Plan your actions.
Think about what you will do differently. Study more often, ask for help, stay organized, or review your notes every day.
Examples of Strong Student Goals
- I will complete all homework before checking my phone or playing games.
- I will raise my math grade by studying for fifteen minutes each night.
- I will participate in class at least once every day.
- I will keep my binder and Chromebook organized so I can find things faster.

A goal I will set to improve my grades next trimester is by paying more attention to the work and try to participate more in math.
My goal is to raise my grades to A’s and B’s. This matters to me because I want to do well at school and not fail. What I will do to reach my goal is work hard and turn in all my assignments and try my best. How I know I reached my goal, I will check my grades often and make sure I did all my assignments.
a goal I need to set for this year is to improve my grades by locking in, and turning my stuff on time, and asking for help and just sit there that’s what you can do in order to get your grades up.
Here is my plan to get better grades, I will study math and I will try harder to focus on science. I will do my work when the assignment is posted and turn it in on the day it was posted. It matters to me because if you have good grades you can have a good job and a good job gives you a lot of money. I will reach my goal and I know it because I have a lot of free time at home and at school so that is enough time to study.
My goal is to receive at least a C in math because in the last trimester, I failed math. I will achieve this by attempting to submit all of my assignments. I will go to school every day on time. This goal matters to me because I do not want any missing work, and that causes stress. I know when I’ll be done with every assignment by checking my to-do list on Google Classroom.
The way I will get my grades better is that I will turn in all my assignments on time and also if I need help I will ask the teacher for help. I will focus more in class so I don’t have to ask for help and I will get my D+ to a C because if I don’t my mom will take my phone away forever. I will work at home if I am not able to finish at school because if I do it at home I will have good grades and I can have my phone and I will not be bored.
