The Forgotten Lunch

Elena’s stomach growled loudly as she watched her classmates unwrap sandwiches and snacks. She reached into her backpack again, hoping by some miracle her lunch had appeared. Nothing. She sighed and stared at her desk. Ms. Jenkins noticed and quietly walked over, slipping a brown paper bag onto Elena’s desk. “It happens to all of us,” she whispered with a kind smile. Inside was a peanut butter sandwich, an apple, and a note: “You’re not alone. Enjoy lunch. –M.J.”
Elena felt warmth rise in her chest. She had been embarrassed, but now she just felt grateful.
