I believe this device was used for transmitting audio or sound. If not, then it was probably for recordings. The cone shape attached to the front supports my point as the shape of the cone helps make the sound reach a higher distance and deliver a clear message. The handle was possibly used to start the recording by twisting it. Popular singers or people who want to deliver a message would use this to help other people around the world to hear their voice.
